How to Approach a Dragon in Fourth Wing
In the books, dragons choose their riders, not the other way around. Colonel Kaori's in-world field guide still offers rules of thumb for meeting each den. This page goes through every color, says what the sources actually claim, and is open about what nobody knows.
Fourth Wing level. The one-line irid note at the end mentions Iron Flame and is labeled.
Quick answer
How to approach a red dragon
Never meet a red's gaze, and come at it from the left and the front.
Why: Reds have a fiery temper, and red scorpiontails are said to lose patience quickest.

How to approach a green dragon
Lower your eyes, but never back down.
Why: Greens are calm and intelligent.

How to approach a brown dragon
Do not show fear or hesitation.
Why: The den guide gives browns no description, so this rule comes from the field guide alone. Fan guides call browns loyal.

How to approach a blue dragon
The field-guide advice is to avoid the encounter and flee.
Why: Blues are very large and famously ruthless, which is the likely reason the advice is to stay away.

How to approach an orange dragon
No approach rule is given in any source we checked.
Why: The den guide calls orange the most unpredictable den. Any specific orange rule you see elsewhere is a guess. The honest takeaway is that unpredictability is the point: there is no safe script.

How to approach a black dragon
No simple rule is listed.
Why: The sources only call blacks the most discerning of the dens, and the rarest. Being observant and measured is a reasonable reading of that, but it is not a rule from the books' guides.
What about irids?
Spoilers: Iron Flame
No approach rule is listed for irids either. See the colors and tails guide for what the sources say about them.
Does approach matter in Dragonkind?
Confirmed Nothing official explains how Dragonkind matches you to a dragon. Press coverage (Parade) reports roughly a 10 percent chance of being burned regardless of your choices.
Player reports (unconfirmed) Fan sites say the same choices do not always give the same dragon. Some players try the field-guide rules as in-character choices, and some report that their approach changed the dragon they were offered, but no mapping from approach to color has been confirmed. Treat it as roleplay, not strategy.
The experience itself lives at dragonkind.com. We are an independent fan guide and have not played it. See our Dragonkind guide for what is known.
