Fourth Wing Dragon Tails
A dragon's tail is its weapon, and the tail type is one of the first things the guides list after color. Five types appear on the den guide's list, and young dragons have a sixth. Here is what each one means and which dragons from our full dragon list carry it.
Fourth Wing level, except the feathertail entry, which mentions Iron Flame and is labeled.
Quick answer
- Daggertail: A tail tipped with knife-like spikes.
- Swordtail: A long tail with razor edges, made for slashing.
- Clubtail: A solid mass at the end, made for bludgeoning.
- Scorpiontail: A barbed tail that one guide calls venomous.
- Morningstartail: A spiked club and the rarest tail.
- Feathertail: The tail of a juvenile, not an adult weapon.
Daggertail
A tail tipped with knife-like spikes. Common across red, orange, green and blue dens.
The den guide gives daggertails to dragons in the red, orange, green and blue dens. It calls the blue daggertail the rarest kind of blue, and Sgaeyl is the one on our list.

Swordtail
A long tail with razor edges, built for slashing. Seen on reds, a brown and the black Codagh.
Swordtails are listed on reds, on one brown (Aotrom, though fan guides disagree) and on the black Codagh.
On our list
Clubtail
A heavy solid mass at the end, made for bludgeoning. The den guide pairs green clubtails with siege work.
The den guide says green dragons are ideal siege weapons, especially the clubtails. Clubtails also appear on a brown and on Aaric's blue, Molvic.
On our list
Scorpiontail
A barbed tail that one guide describes as venomous. Red scorpiontails have a reputation for a short temper.
The den guide says red scorpiontails are the quickest to anger, which is why the field guide advice for reds is to never meet their gaze. Scorpiontails also appear on a brown and an orange.
On our list
Morningstartail
A club studded with spikes, the rarest tail. A fan guide says only two are known and names Tairn as one; the other is not named in the sources we checked.
The rarest tail. Fan guides say only two are known and name Tairn as one. We could not find the other named in our sources, so we do not name it.

Feathertail
Spoilers: Iron Flame
The tail of a juvenile. Guides call feathertails unsuitable for bonding, with Andarna as the exception.
Feathertails belong to juvenile dragons. Guides call them unsuitable for bonding, with Andarna as the exception. Her adult tail is disputed between sources.

Tails in Dragonkind
Player reports (unconfirmed) Fan trackers say the Dragonkind result card names a tail type along with the color. Reported results so far include swordtails, daggertails, clubtails, scorpiontails and morningstartails, and no feathertail. One tracker puts the clubtail as the most common. Trackers disagree on the exact shares and the numbers move as more results come in, so we do not publish percentages.
The experience itself lives at dragonkind.com. We are an independent fan guide and have not played it.

Dragon tail FAQ
What are the dragon tail types in Fourth Wing?
The Empyrean Series den guide (a fan reference) lists five: daggertail, swordtail, clubtail, scorpiontail and morningstartail. Fan guides add the feathertail, which belongs to juvenile dragons.
What is a morningstartail dragon?
A dragon whose tail is a club studded with spikes. It is described as the rarest tail, and fan guides say only two exist. Tairn is named as one of them.
Which Fourth Wing dragon has a morningstartail?
Tairn, Violet's black dragon, is the morningstartail named in the den guide. The second morningstartail is not named in the sources we checked.
What tail does Sgaeyl have?
A daggertail. The den guide describes her as a navy-blue dragon, and calls the blue daggertail the rarest of the blues.
Is there a link between tail type and dragon color?
Loosely. Daggertails show up across several dens, and the den guide ties green dragons to clubtails and red scorpiontails to short tempers. No source says a color always comes with one tail.
Does the tail matter in Dragonkind?
Fan sites report that the Dragonkind result card shows a tail type, and that players have seen swordtails, daggertails, clubtails, scorpiontails and morningstartails. This comes from fan trackers, not from the creators, and the counts differ between trackers. We have not played it.
