Dragonkind guide: retry timer, black dragon and tips
Last updated: October 4, 2026
This guide is compiled from press coverage and player reports. We have not played Dragonkind ourselves, because it requires an email account, and we will update it as the picture changes. Spoilers: light Fourth Wing and Iron Flame (dragon colors and one mention of irids).
TL;DR
- What it is: a free, web-based choose-your-own-adventure Threshing at dragonkind.com, made by Yarros Ink (Rebecca Yarros's company). It launched October 1, 2026.
- Length: about ten minutes per run, according to fan sites.
- Account: an email account is needed to start. Login codes go out in batches, so check spam if yours is late.
- Burned? The official FAQ says you can try again after a few hours; Parade reports four. Jump to the countdown.
- Unlimited retries: there is no limit on how many times you can die, and you can keep trying until you bond (official FAQ).
- Odds: Yarros says there is roughly a 10 percent chance of being burned no matter what you choose.
- Black or blue dragon: all colors and tail types are possible to bond with (official FAQ), but no method is published. See the sections below for what is rumored.
How Dragonkind works, step by step
Confirmed (press: Parade, Oct 4, 2026) Confirmed (Rebecca Yarros FAQ)
- Sign in with an email account. Starting requires one, per the privacy policy, and your progress is tied to it. Login codes are sent in batches; if yours has not arrived, check your spam folder.
- Get sorted. You are placed in a wing, a section and a squad at the Riders Quadrant before the Threshing begins.
- Point and click through the story. It is a choose-your-own-adventure; you make choices on the way to the Vale.
- Face the dragons. In the Vale a dragon either bonds with you or burns you.
- Burned? If you die during the Threshing, you can try again after a few hours (official FAQ; Parade reports four). There is no limit on retries, so you can keep going until you bond.
- Bonded? You get a result card.
Fan sites / player reports (unconfirmed)
Fan sites say a run takes about ten minutes, that you can replay, and that the same choices do not always lead to the same dragon. They also say players often burn a few times before bonding. Those details are player reports, not creator statements; the creators do confirm the unlimited retries above.
Dragonkind retry countdown
Enter when you were burned and the timer shows when your wait should be over. The official FAQ says "a few hours" and Parade reports four, so the timer defaults to four hours. The real figure may change, so you can edit the length below.
Time left
--:--:--
Enter when you were burned, then press Start.
The timer runs in your browser and your entry is saved only on this device. The reminder is optional, asks for notification permission only when you press the button, and works only while this page stays open. Not affiliated with Dragonkind; the real wait is whatever dragonkind.com says.
How to get a black dragon in Dragonkind
Confirmed (Rebecca Yarros FAQ) Every dragon color and tail type is possible to bond with, black included, and you can keep trying until you bond. Confirmed Nothing official explains how Dragonkind matches you to a dragon, so no method for black is published. Press coverage says only that there is a roughly 10 percent chance of being burned regardless of choices, which hints at a random element.
Unconfirmed: fan theory The best-known rumor is the battery theory: enter the Vale with your phone at 76 to 90 percent battery and you get a black dragon. It spread through fan sites in the first days. The creators have not confirmed it, we found no independent evidence, and it may be a joke that stuck. Fun to try, but do not count on it.
Unconfirmed: roleplay tips In the books, black is the rarest den, known for intelligence, discernment and cunning. If you want to play in character, act like it: be observant, measured and hard to rattle. Whether the game rewards that is unknown.
Fan sites also report that results vary even when the choices are identical, so no answer key is guaranteed. Our dragon colors guide covers what black dragons are like in the books.
How to get a blue dragon in Dragonkind
Confirmed (Rebecca Yarros FAQ) Every dragon color and tail type is possible to bond with, blue included, and retries are unlimited. Confirmed No method for getting blue is published.
Unconfirmed Player-submitted trackers show blue dragons turning up alongside every other color, so blue does not look like a once-in-a-blue-moon result. Those trackers are small, unofficial and keep shifting, so we do not quote percentages.
Roleplay tips from the books Blue dragons are sapphire-to-navy giants with a ruthless streak. The in-world field guide by Colonel Kaori also gives approach rules for other dens: do not meet a red's gaze, do not back down from a green, and do not show hesitation to a brown. Fan players try these as in-character choices. No one has shown they change the outcome.
Can you get Tairn, an irid or a gold feathertail?
Confirmed (Rebecca Yarros FAQ) All dragon colors and tail types are possible to bond with.
Player reports (unconfirmed) Fan trackers report six colors (red, orange, green, brown, blue, black) and five tail types (swordtail, daggertail, clubtail, scorpiontail, morningstartail). We have seen no reports of an irid or a gold feathertail result. The official FAQ says all colors and tail types are possible, but it does not say whether irids, feathertails or named dragons from the books such as Tairn can appear. Result cards do show a dragon name, so named dragons exist, but how many is unknown.
For what these dragons are like in the books, see colors and tails.
What is on the result card
Fan sites report (unconfirmed) The card is described as shareable and listing your dragon's name, tail type, color, sex, age and lineage. This does not come from the press coverage we read, so details may differ.
Easter eggs and what is next
Confirmed (Parade) Yarros says there are several easter eggs and that she plans to expand the experience.
Fan sites report (unconfirmed) Some sites say readers will be able to manifest signets in May. Parade does not mention that, so treat the date as a rumor until Yarros Ink says more.
Confirmed (Rebecca Yarros FAQ) Dragonkind merch is sold on Rebecca Yarros's shop. It is US only for now, and the team says it is working on international shipping.
Dragonkind vs the Threshing Day book
They are separate things released two days apart. Threshing Day is a book of stories, published September 29, 2026; Dragonkind is a free web experience that opened on October 1, the in-world Threshing day. See our Threshing Day book guide for the details. Searching for "the Threshing Day website" usually means Dragonkind.
No email? Try a no-signup quiz
If you do not want to make an account, our unofficial dragon den quiz takes about a minute. It is a fan quiz for fun and does not predict what Dragonkind gives you.
Dragonkind FAQ
What is Dragonkind?
Dragonkind is a free, web-based choose-your-own-adventure experience at dragonkind.com in which you play a candidate at Basgiath War College, cross the Vale on Threshing day and either bond with a dragon or get burned. It is made by Yarros Ink, Rebecca Yarros's company, and launched on October 1, 2026.
Is this site Dragonkind or official?
No. Fourth Wing Dragons is an independent fan guide. Dragonkind itself lives at dragonkind.com.
Is Dragonkind free, and do I need an account?
Fan sites and the privacy policy describe it as free with no payment. Starting requires an email account (a one-time code is reported, with no password), and your cadet and bond are saved to it. Rebecca Yarros's FAQ says login codes are sent in batches, so if yours is slow, check your spam folder.
How long does Dragonkind take?
Fan sites say about ten minutes per run. That is a player estimate, not an official figure.
How long is the Dragonkind retry wait?
A few hours, per the official FAQ on Rebecca Yarros's site, which says you can try again "after a few hours" if you die during the Threshing. Parade reports four hours, so our countdown defaults to four and you can edit it.
Is there a limit on how many times I can try Dragonkind?
No. The official FAQ says there is no limit on the number of times you can die, and you can keep trying until you bond.
My Dragonkind code didn't arrive. What now?
The official FAQ says login codes are sent in batches. If yours has not arrived, check your spam folder and give it a little time.
Is there Dragonkind merch?
Yes. Rebecca Yarros's shop has a Dragonkind merch page. Per the official FAQ it currently ships to the US only, and they say they are working on international availability.
How do I get a black dragon in Dragonkind?
Officially, every dragon color and tail type is possible to bond with, but nobody has a confirmed method for getting black. The best-known claim, a phone-battery trick, is an unverified fan theory. Results also vary between runs with identical choices.
How do I get a blue dragon in Dragonkind?
Blue is officially possible (every color is), but there is no confirmed method either. Fan trackers show blue results do turn up, but nobody has published a reliable route to one.
Does the phone battery trick work?
Unverified. The theory says entering the Vale with 76 to 90 percent battery gives a black dragon. The creators have not confirmed it, and we have not seen independent evidence.
Are Dragonkind results random?
Partly, it seems. Yarros told Parade there is about a 10 percent chance of being incinerated regardless of what you do, and fan reports say the same choices can give different dragons. The matching method has not been published.
Can I get Tairn, an irid or a gold feathertail?
We have seen no report of irid or feathertail results, and it is unknown whether named dragons from the books can appear. Fan trackers report six colors and five tail types only. The official FAQ says all colors and tail types are possible to bond with.
Will Dragonkind add signets?
Parade says Yarros plans to expand the experience and that there are several easter eggs. Fan sites report signets arriving in May. That date is not in the press coverage we read, so treat it as unconfirmed.
Is there a free quiz that does not need an email?
Yes, our unofficial dragon den quiz needs no signup. It is a fan quiz and does not predict your Dragonkind result.
