Short answer: the fourth main Empyrean novel has no announced title, no release date and no cover. Rebecca Yarros said in September 2026 that she is still writing it. Everything else you may see, from a December 2026 date to a 2028 guess, is a placeholder or speculation.

What Yarros has said about Book 4

Three points have a traceable source.

• She is writing it. Announcing her fall 2026 tour on Instagram, Yarros said the season was busy with releases and "writing book four", as reported by Winter Is Coming on September 3, 2026. That is the most recent statement we found.
• It started in March 2026. Fan sites such as Empyrean Riders and The Book Feed report that she returned to the Empyrean after finishing the contemporary novel Peculiar Stars in March 2026. These are fan-run sites summarising her social posts, so treat the month as reported, not as a publisher statement.
• The series is five books. The same sources say Yarros has said there will be five main novels, which makes Book 4 a middle chapter rather than the end.

Dates you may have seen, and why to ignore them

Searching "Fourth Wing Book 4 release date" turns up several numbers. None has a publisher announcement behind it.

• A January 2026 date appeared on retailer and Goodreads listings. Yarros rejected it, saying that date was impossible, according to the Empyrean Riders summary. It never happened.
• December 29, 2026 appears on the Next New Books tracker, which labels the date a placeholder. The author is still drafting in the fall of 2026, so a release this winter would be unusually fast.
• An August 2027 screenshot has circulated; we could not trace it to a publisher, so we do not use it.
• "2027" or "2028" guesses from fan sites are estimates based on how long the earlier books took. They are opinions, not news.

Our rule on this site: a date goes in the table only when the publisher, the author or a retailer pre-order page with a real ISBN carries it. We re-check this page when new statements appear, and the "facts checked" date above shows when we last did.

Is there a pre-order?

Not that we could find. A real pre-order normally appears together with a title and cover reveal. Until then, a retailer page that shows a date is a stub created from a database record. If you want to be told first, the safest signal is the author's own announcements and her newsletter, and we will update this page when either carries something concrete.

Book 4 is not Threshing Day

This is the single most common mix-up. Threshing Day came out on September 29, 2026 and collects thirteen short stories told from the points of view of characters and dragons that readers already know. Some databases call it "the fourth book" because it is the fourth published title in the series, which is where the confusion starts. It does not continue the main storyline. Both our Threshing Day guide and the Dragonkind guide keep that distinction clear, and the interactive Dragonkind experience is a separate web project again.

Graphic novel adaptation

You asked about a graphic novel too, and this one does have news. The project was announced in March 2025: Ten Speed Graphic, with Piatkus and Entangled Publishing, will publish six graphic novels covering Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, two volumes per book, adapted by Yarros herself. In August 2026 Kirkus reported that Fourth Wing, The Graphic Novel: Volume One is scheduled for April 6, 2027, illustrated by Anabel Rossi, covering chapters 1 to 22 of the novel. A second volume for the rest of Fourth Wing is planned; we found no date for it. Because it adapts books 1 to 3, it does not include Book 4 material.

The TV series is separate too

The Prime Video adaptation has its own timeline and also has no release date. See the TV series cast and release page for what has been reported. Like the graphic novel, it says nothing about Book 4.
