Colonel Panchek: Role and Dragon
Facts checked 2026-10-30. Last updated 2026-10-30
Spoilers: the quick facts are early Fourth Wing (Book 1). One section spoils Iron Flame (Book 2) and is labelled. Fan guide.
Short answer: Colonel Panchek is the Commandant of Basgiath War College, and his dragon is a green clubtail. He first appears in Fourth Wing and returns in Iron Flame. Public information about him is thin, so this page is short on purpose and says where our sources stop.
Quick facts (Fourth Wing)
| Item | What the profile says |

| Rank and role | Colonel; Commandant of Basgiath War College |
| Dragon | Green clubtail (name not confirmed) |
| First appears | Fourth Wing (Book 1) |
| Also appears | Iron Flame (Book 2) |

What a commandant does
In the war-college setting, the commandant runs the school that trains riders. The cadets in the Riders Quadrant live under his command, which is why his name comes up when readers ask who is in charge of Basgiath. Major Varrish reports directly to him, according to the Empyrean Riders profile. Varrish is bonded to Solas, who appears on our dragon list.
The profile also records one remark made in Fourth Wing by a cadet, Tara, who says the post is a stepping stone for him and that he wants Sorrengail's job, then General Melgren's. That is a character's opinion inside the story, and we repeat it only as such; it does not prove what he actually wants.
His dragon: a green clubtail
The profile says his dragon is a green clubtail. We could not find a name for it in the sources we trust. Several green clubtails exist in the series, so we will not guess which one it is. If you know the page of the book that names it, tell us through the contact page and we will check it.
What a green clubtail means in practice: greens are described in the den guide, a fan reference, as dragons you should never back down from, and a clubtail has a heavy hammer-like tail. Read the colors page and the tails page for those traits, and how to approach dragons for the advice. For other green dragons, see the list on the home page.
How to read the commandant's role
Because the sources are short, the safest way to use this page is as a map of what is known. The rank and post are stated plainly. The dragon's color and tail are stated plainly. Everything about motive, loyalty or future plans comes from other characters' remarks or from fan interpretation, and those are not the same as facts. When you reread, watch which scenes put him on the page and which only mention him; that difference explains why so few details are recorded about him.
Iron Flame (spoilers: Book 2)
The profile says Panchek is present when Solas burns the third-year cadets in Iron Flame. This is the only Iron Flame event it ties to him, and we do not describe it further. We have not checked the passage ourselves, so treat the wording as the profile's, not ours.
What we could not confirm
- The name of his dragon.
- His first name or any history before he became commandant.
- Anything about him in Onyx Storm or in Book 4. Book 4 has no title or date yet; see our Book 4 status page.
- Whether he is shown in the upcoming Prime Video series. Casting reports so far cover only two leads; see the TV series page.
We will extend this page only with facts that have a source. Writing 800 words about a minor character from nothing would not help you, and the base facts above are what we can stand behind today.
Who else to read about
If you came for the cast of Basgiath, Aaric Graycastle and his dragon Molvic are next, then the dragons of the main squad: Tairn, Sgaeyl, Andarna and Codagh.
FAQ
Who is Panchek in Fourth Wing?
Colonel Panchek is the Commandant of Basgiath War College, per the Empyrean Riders profile.
What dragon does Panchek have?
A green clubtail. We could not find the dragon's name in a source we trust, so we do not give one. Several green clubtails exist in the series, so a name from another page is not evidence.
Does Panchek appear in Iron Flame?
Yes, according to the profile, which also ties him to an Iron Flame event involving Major Varrish's dragon Solas. That is a spoiler and is kept in a marked section.
Who reports to Panchek?
Major Varrish, per the profile. See Solas on our dragon list.
Is Panchek a villain?
The sources we checked do not label him either way. One line reported from Fourth Wing says he is ambitious, which is a rumor within the story, not a judgment of the author.
Does Panchek speak?
Yes. The profile's editor answers a reader question by saying he speaks but gestures a lot.
