The second-largest dragon in the series and one of only two morningstartails the fan guides mention. He is mated to Sgaeyl.

Tairn is a black dragon, which makes him part of the rarest and most discerning den. His tail is a morningstartail, a club studded with spikes. A fan guide says only two such tails are known and counts Tairn as one of them; it does not name the other.
He is the second-largest dragon in the guides. Only Codagh, the general's black swordtail, is bigger. The same fan guides put his age at over a hundred years.
Tairn is bonded to Violet Sorrengail, whose signet is lightning, and he is mated to the navy-blue Sgaeyl. The in-world field guide says one mated dragon cannot survive without the other.

Violet is the only rider the guides list as bonded to two dragons. Her second bond is the gold feathertail Andarna.
