A brown swordtail per the den guide and several others. One guide lists him as a red clubtail, so treat that as an outlier.

Who is Aotrom? He is the dragon bonded to Ridoc Gamlyn, a rider in Second Squad, Flame Section, Fourth Wing at Basgiath War College. The Empyrean Series den guide, a fan reference, lists him as a brown dragon with a swordtail, and the Empyrean Riders wiki, Ink and Imaginings, The Book Feed and Screen Rant all repeat that description. Ridoc's signet is ice wielding, which makes this pair one of the clearer examples of a brown dragon in the series.

Is he brown or red? Mostly brown. An earlier research pass flagged one fan listing that gave him as a red clubtail, and a search summary repeated that claim. When we reopened the pages we could cite, none said it: the den guide, Empyrean Riders, Ink and Imaginings, The Book Feed and Screen Rant all give brown and swordtail. We therefore treat the red clubtail listing as an unconfirmed outlier. Sources disagree only in that one place, and we could not trace it to a page we can link.

What does a brown swordtail mean? Swordtail is one of the tail types the guides use to sort dragons, alongside clubtail, daggertail, scorpiontail and the rare morningstartail. Ink and Imaginings lists Aotrom, Codagh and the red dragon Sliseag as its known examples. Screen Rant says swordtails tend to go with larger dragons, though it does not claim that for Aotrom specifically. Our tail and color pages explain how the labels work and where fan guides drift apart.

How big is he? The Book Feed calls him a typical fully grown dragon of about 25 feet tall and uses him as its yardstick, saying Tairn is nearly twice that height. The same page admits the books do not give exact measurements, so these are estimates drawn from comparisons in the text. We would not treat 25 feet as a hard number. It is a useful way to picture an average adult next to the giants.

How old is he? Sources disagree. The Empyrean Riders wiki gives him as twenty-two years old, while Winter Is Coming, writing about the Threshing Day anthology, calls him one of the youngest dragons in his group at twenty. The gap may come from different points in the timeline or from rounding, but none of the pages explain it, so the age stays approximate. Either way, he is young by dragon standards, far from the century-plus ages fans give the oldest black dragons.

What does his name mean? Empyrean Riders glosses Aotrom as the Gaelic word for light. That is one wiki entry and we found no second source for it, so it is best read as a fan translation. Fan speculation about Ridoc possibly having a second dragon or signet circulates online, citing the name and his tattoo, but it is theory and not something any source we opened confirms.

Spoilers: Threshing Day

What is his Threshing story? In Threshing Day, the 2026 anthology of one-off bonding scenes, Ridoc's chapter pairs him with Aotrom. Winter Is Coming says Ridoc is queasy before the hunt, then meets a brown swordtail at a stream who splashes him in play instead of attacking. Ink and Imaginings adds that the dragon tests a cadet's wit and climbs a redwood to see whether he will follow. Water and sap details appear on only one of those pages, so we leave the finer points to readers of the chapter.

Spoilers: Threshing Day

What is he like? The anthology scene casts him as playful and sharp, a dragon who challenges Ridoc's assumptions and enjoys teasing him. Ridoc is described by Empyrean Riders as sarcastic and funny, rarely angry, and loyal to friends, so a bond built on humor fits. That reading comes from two secondary summaries rather than our own reading of the book, so check it against your copy. The den guide offers no personality text for him.

Spoilers: Iron Flame

What happens to him later? Empyrean Riders says Ridoc gets a tattoo of his brown swordtail on his neck in Iron Flame. Screen Rant says Aotrom is injured in the Battle of Basgiath but survives. We found only that one source for the injury and none for his role in Onyx Storm, so we do not describe it. If you can point to a page-level source, the fan wiki is the better place to check first.

How should you approach a brown dragon? The den guide gives only one instruction: never show fear to a brown dragon. Ink and Imaginings notes that brown is the color the author has said least about, with no named bloodline and no reputation, and says Threshing Day finally gave browns real material. Treat that as a fan reading. Our approach guide collects what is known and what is guesswork for each color, including brown.

Who else is brown? The guides list Chradh, Aimsir and Fuil beside Aotrom. Chradh is Garrick Tavis's scorpiontail, Aimsir belongs to General Lilith Sorrengail and has no tail type given, and Fuil is a clubtail whose rider appears in only one source. Compared with Tairn or Codagh, all of the browns are lightly documented, which is why every claim above leans on summaries.

Can you get Aotrom in Dragonkind? Rebecca Yarros's FAQ says all colors and tail types are possible in Dragonkind, but we found nothing saying named book dragons can appear, so it is unconfirmed. This independent fan page is compiled from published guides and press, not from playing the game.
