Who is Cath? Cath is a red swordtail dragon bonded to Dain Aetos, Violet Sorrengail's childhood best friend. The Empyrean Riders character guide, the Empyrean Series den guide (a fan reference), Fantasy Fangirls, Screen Rant and two Literary Lifestyle charts all agree on the color, the tail and the rider. Beyond that, the written record is thin: most guides give Cath a single line in a table, so this page separates what is repeated across sources from what only one site says.

What does the name mean? Empyrean Riders glosses Cath as meaning battle in Gaelic and lists it in its dragon table for Dain. That is the only name explanation we found, so treat it as a fan-guide reading rather than something confirmed by the author. It is a short, blunt name for a dragon that guides group with the biggest and most dangerous of the series.

Why does a red swordtail matter? Red is the den linked with short tempers. The den guide says reds demand respect, that you should never meet their gaze, and that swordtails in this color have fiery tempers and are especially dangerous when provoked. Screen Rant calls red the most short-tempered and mercurial color and says swordtails tend to belong to larger dragons, their long edges used with the precision of a blade. Fantasy Fangirls adds that reds are the quickest to torch others. None of those pages say the general red traits apply to Cath in particular, so they describe the den, not him.

How big and how strong is he? Screen Rant describes Cath as one of the biggest swordtails and counts him among the strongest dragons in the series. It also quotes Dain calling him a nasty piece of work when worked up, which is a rare direct hint at temperament. We could not find a measured size, an age, a sire or a dam in any page we opened, so we give none. Pronouns also vary between guides; we follow the Screen Rant quote and use he, with that caveat.

Which other red swordtails are named? The den guide lists Cath and Sliseag, Sawyer Henrick's dragon, as the two red swordtails on its red list, alongside Deigh and Thoirt as daggertails and Ghrian as a scorpiontail. Screen Rant also mentions a red swordtail belonging to Felix, but does not name it. If you are comparing the red den, the Cath page, the Sliseag page and our red-dragon overview are the best places to see how the tails differ.

Spoilers: Fourth Wing

What is Dain's signet, and does it come from Cath? Guides list Dain's signet as retrocognition, which Bookish Goblin describes as reading someone's recent memories by touching their face. Fantasy Fangirls simply calls him a memory reader. A web search summary even suggested the ability works through the bond with Cath, but that came from a search snippet, not a page we could open, so we do not state it. What the sources do say is that Dain has the signet and Cath is his dragon; they do not describe Cath's own power.

Spoilers: Fourth Wing

How does Dain use that signet against Violet? According to Bookish Goblin, Dain reads Violet's memories in the first book and learns that Xaden Riorson has been in Athebyne. He passes this to his father, and the result is an ambush disguised as a War Games assignment in which Liam Mairi is killed. Cath is not described in that summary, so this is the rider's story, not the dragon's. It does explain why Dain is so unwelcome among Violet's friends afterward.

Spoilers: Iron Flame

What happens to Dain in Iron Flame? The same guide says Violet keeps her distance while grieving. When Burton Varrish interrogates Violet, Dain reads her memories, learns the truth about venin and stabs Varrish, then chooses to fight alongside Violet rather than hide. At Aretia he works to make amends and helps translate old journals to learn how to raise the wards. Again, the sources are silent about Cath's part, so we will not guess at one.

Spoilers: Iron Flame

Do the sources agree on Dain's rank and father? Not fully. Empyrean Riders and Bookish Goblin call him a second-year rider and squad leader in the first book, while Fantasy Fangirls calls him a third-year wingleader and a member of the Quest Squad. A comment on the Empyrean Riders page even notes a section leader correction. His father is called Colonel Aetos by two guides and General Aetos, commanding general of Basgiath, by Fantasy Fangirls. These look like different points in the timeline rather than a clean contradiction, but sources disagree and we leave the exact titles unconfirmed.

Spoilers: Onyx Storm

What changes in Onyx Storm? Empyrean Riders says Dain changes significantly, stays loyal to Violet, steals from his father to help her, and shows kindness to Sloane Mairi. The same page says his father is revealed as a villain working with venin in Iron Flame and becomes General of Basgiath in the third book. It describes no specific scenes for Cath, and neither do the other charts we read, so Cath's role in the third book is unconfirmed.

What should you do if you meet a red swordtail? In-world advice, repeated by the den guide and Fantasy Fangirls, is to avoid eye contact and approach from the left or the front. Those lines are written about red scorpiontails and reds in general, not Cath specifically, but they are the closest thing to a safety rule. Our red-dragon approach guide expands on the idea for fans curious about the Threshing.

Can you get Cath in Dragonkind? Rebecca Yarros's FAQ says all colors and tail types are possible in Dragonkind, but it does not say whether named book dragons can appear, so that is unconfirmed. This is an independent fan page compiled from published guides and press, not from playing the game.
